What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia, or FMS, is a chronic condition, characterized by muscle and join pain, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. Other symptoms include irritability of the bowel and bladder, cold hands and feet, morning stiffness, headaches, decreased attention span, memory loss, and hyper-sensitivity to light, sound, touch, and smell. FMS has been described as the “irritable everything” syndrome.

The cause of Fibromyalgia is not clear, and there are no specific diagnostic tests to confirm the condition.

Diagnostic is made following the College of Rheumatology criteria:

  • Widespread pain present over 3 months
  • Negative diagnostic tests for other diseases
  • Presence of 11 of the 18 tender points
  • Presence of FMS symptoms

There is no “cure” for Fibromyalgia. It’s affect on a person’s ability to perform even simple tasks can be very minor or may be significantly limiting.

Fibromyalgia Treatment

After a detailed evaluation, the treatment plan is tailored to the individual’s needs. The program incorporates knowledge of the characteristics of FMS into the treatment plan, offering an approach that differs from “traditional” therapy.

Treatment includes:

  • Sleep modifications
  • Physiological quieting
  • Diet recommendations
  • Use of cold/heat modalities
  • FMS specific exercise program
  • Biofeedback
  • Gentle myofascial/manual therapy
  • Education in proper dress
  • Pacing techniques
  • Crisis management plan

Because FMS is a chronic condition, the goals of treatment are the management of symptoms, improvement in lifestyle, and restoration of functional abilities to the patient’s maximum potential.
